MEA also called membrane electrode assembly, which is core component of PEM fuel cell. It consists of a proton exchange membrane sandwiched between two electrodes that embed catalysts.  Anode and cathode are electrically insulated from each other by proton exchange membrane, which keeps hydrogen and air separate.


The catalyst layers are made of porous carbon support particles covered by platinum nanoparticles and partially covered by a proton-conducting polymer firm called ionomer. This allows oxygen, hydrogen, and water can all diffuse through the pores in the catalyst layers to react with each other.
